The Crazy World of Soaps: A Week in Review

Hey everyone! So, a lot of people told me they liked the week in review thing so I figured I’d do it again for last week. So without further ado, here’s previously in the crazy world of soaps…

Craziest Moment:

I have to go with the Jill and Katharine’s cat fight on the Young and the Restless. It was the moment we all were waiting for once we knew the test results were in and it didn’t disappoint! Jill and Katharine resumed their old ways the minute the test results came in at Billy and Chloe’s wedding. First came the verbal sparring and then came the food fight. Poor Chloe, didn’t know what hit her as she walked in to see her wedding cake all over Katherine, Jill and whoever else had gotten in the way. What a blast to see the two of them grabbing chunks of cake and throwing them at each other! Hear’s hoping we get another blow out real soon.

Saddest Moment(s):

Days of Our Lives was crying central for me last week as I tuned in and watched the death of Tony DiMera. I know after the many deaths of Tony DiMera or Andre or whoever, you’d think I’d be over it by now, but apparently I’m not – lol! Thaao Penglis was knocking it out of the park as usual, using mostly facial expressions to convey emotions as Nicole threatened him, Lexie fussed about him and as EJ tried to get a clue as Tony tried tell him about Nicole’s secret. Then, when he died, the actors involved all gave knock out performances as they dealt with the fall out. James Scott broke my heart as EJ came out of Tony’s room and told everyone he was flat lining. Renee Jones was equally heart-breaking as she came out to tell everyone Tony was gone and EJ comforted her as she broke down his arms. Joe Moscolo’s portrayal of Stefano had me crying as he teared up at the news and then vowed vengeance on Phillip. Even Leann Hunley’s return as Anna – as unfortunately brief as it was - moved me as she ripped into Stefano and blamed him for Tony’s death, before slapping him across the face and leaving. It was definitely an emotionally week in Salem.

Soapiest Moment:

This definitely has to go to the Young and the Restless and Chloe and Billy’s Wedding. First, Billy is late because he was hung over after a night of debauchery with the Maid of Honour and his brother’s almost ex-wife, Sharon. Then, while Jill was finding out that Katharine really was Katharine and that Kay wasn’t really her mother, Billy and Chloe were saying their “I do’s” in order to help keep custody of their daughter Delia. Meanwhile, as these two very soapy things were happening, Katharine’s granddaughter and Billy’s ex, Mackenzie arrived at the mansion. After the “I Do’s” Billy finds out that Mac is back, which hits him hard, and then he learns the test results which mean he is no longer Katharine’s grandson and the reason that he and Mac broke up years ago – because they had found out they were cousins – just didn’t matter anymore. So now, Billy is trapped in a marriage with a woman he doesn’t love, while the woman he really loves is back and actually available. It doesn’t really get any soapier than that!

Worst Moment:

CBS announcing the cancellation of Guiding Light. If the announcement itself wasn’t bad enough, to do it on April Fool’s Day was just damn tacky! Shame on you CBS, shame on you!

Favourite Girl Power Moment(s):

Okay, now you might be wondering why this even needs a category, so I will explain. Most soaps today seem to forget that women are their primary target audience (*coughs * GH) and seem out of touch with us women, so when a soap seems to remember we exist I feel the need to point it out –lol! Anyway, my first favourite moment is OLTL showing Marty and Jessica renewing their friendship. Both of these ladies have had a rough year and made some pretty bad mistakes, so it was nice to see them bond over that, bury the hatchet and do something as simple as talk about guys at the diner. Of course this being a soap, the men in their lives eventually broke both their hearts by trying to do something noble for two other women which led to my second favourite moment, another female bonding scene of the two of them drowning their sorrows in tea. I loved that the writers used the fact that both characters can’t drink and made something fun out of it by having them make fun of the fact they were taking shots of tea. Soaps these days don’t really show female friendships anymore so I’d like to thank Ron Carlavati and his team for remembering we like to see them.

Favourite Return:

There were a few returns this week, but my absolute favourite was the return of One Life To Live’s Hank Gannon. What an awesome surprise this week! I knew he was coming back, but I haven’t really been following spoilers so I didn’t know he was going to be back on Wednesday, so when Nora opened the door to the Buchanan mansion and found herself looking at her ex-husband Hank Gannon, and then she smiled – I found myself smiling too. Hank’s return to help Nora and Bo through this rough time with their son, Matthew’s paralysis is most welcome by this long-time viewer. As Nora finally broke down and cried on Hank’s shoulder, I cried. When, Bo arrived and saw Hank, the smile and look of relief on his face as he saw his best friend made me smile and cry. The actors got back into their rhythm as if he had never left. After the crappy Wednesday I’d had after hearing about Guiding Light, the return of Hank Gannon just made me feel like everything would be okay in soapland – even if it was just for a moment.

Worst Character:

Now, I know both OLTL’s Stacey and Days of Our Lives' Melanie were on this week, but I’m going to surprise everyone and not give this to them. The character that annoyed the hell out of me and pissed me off the most this week was Sharon Newman Abbott. Maybe it’s because my roommate and I watch Y&R live while we eat dinner, so I can’t FF through her like can the two above mentioned irritants, but I just wanted to slap this girl silly this week – and since I couldn’t, I was cheering for Phyllis to do it for me! I am sooooo tired of Sharon being St. Sharon while she’s sleeping around town and stealing from everyone and everywhere. And then, when Phyllis calls her on her crap she blames her for everything. Sigh. I love characters that sleep around and steal and scheme when they admit that’s who they are and they don’t try to sound perfect and – they just try to be they’re crazy lovable selves – but Sharon drives me freaking crazy with all her whining and ‘woe is me’ crap. I get it her life is falling apart, but you can’t try to sell yourself as Little Miss Perfect while your sleeping with your husband’s brother, your husband and your ex-husband and stealing anything that isn’t glued down– it just doesn’t fly!

Lines of the week:

Days of Our Lives:

Nicole to a (tubed Tony in his hospital bed): “You owe me your life. And you know how you're gonna repay me? You're going to keep your mouth shut, agreed? Oh, for God's sake, Tony, say something!”
Nurse (comes in and points at tube): “Hey, hey, hey. He can’t.

Stefano (to Nicole): “Just get out of my house you lying bitch!”

Lucas (to Sami): “You were pregnant, you were being stalked by an assassin, and you fell for your bodyguard, which, by the way, that's not compatibility, all right? That's Stockholm syndrome.”

General Hospital:

Claudia (to Johnny and Maxie): He [Ric] overdosed on pills and booze and he passed out cold after we had sex. You got to get him out of here.
Maxie: Finally, someone more screwed up than me.

One Life to Live:

Hank (to Bo): All-righty, then. So, there's just one thing we need to talk about. Nora and Clint?
Bo: Uh-huh. No, no. Don't even go there.

Bartender (trying to stop Todd from leaving): I'm going to need you to settle up your tab.
Todd: Oh, no, I paid you for the drink.
Bartender: Your friend said to put his dinner on your tab.
Todd: I don't have any friends.

Young and the Restless:
Billy: Hey, Mom. I wasn't sure you would be here.
Jill: I'm here for you.
Chloe: And what an interesting wedding gift-- a pink slip. Thank you.

Chloe: See, that is the difference between you and me, Jill. Billy was always my favorite.
Colleen: She's just not his.
Chloe: I heard that.

Well, that’s it for this week’s review! Please share your own thoughts on this past week. And I Hope we get some happier news in soapland in the days to come.

Ttyl!

  1. Since the only show I actually watch is OLTL, I can't really comment on the others. I did however see the aftermath of the cake fight between Jill and Katherine, and as fun as it seemed, YR reeks with Sheffer's idea of entertainment. Torturing people, the characters but also the fans, non-stop. Or am I completely mistaken?

Since you've been watching OLTL longer than I, could you enlighten me about Hanks past? I did figure out he was Nora's ex and that they share a daughter together but that's it. What happened there and what did you think about Dorian and Ray Montez continuing their little dance? Is A Martinez really leaving the show?

  2. Well with the Jill and Katharine thing - Sheffer and Maria Arena Bell are just fixing a stupid storyline twist that the previous head writer had frakked up. There's a little bit of torture for characters and couples going on, but just enough to make it soapy really. Of course, there are some failing stories like what's going on with Kevin, but over all Y&R is pretty good right now.

On to OLTL, Hank is Nora's ex-husband. They share a daughter, Rachel who had a little problem with drugs in her past. He used to be the D.A. in Llanview. He actually prosecuted Todd, Zack and Powell for Marty's rape trial, so his return occurring at the same time as Zach is kind of interesting. Hank is also Bo's Best Friend - they used to be the tag team of Commissioner and DA in town. I don’t know how long you’ve been watching, but Hank is also R.J.’s brother. So, he’s had to deal with being D.A. and having a criminal for a brother. Hank’s crack about Nora and Clint was funny for two reasons, one, because nobody really gets the Nora and Clint thing and secondly, Nora used to have a thing with R.J. too, so she seems to have a thing with brothers –lol! Hope that helps.

In regards to A Martinez, I’m not even bothering getting invested in him and Dorian because he is leaving the show soon. I think I’m being kind of resistant to them too, because I’m a David and Dorian fan too. Too bad Tuc Watkins can’t be around more. I gotta give it to the writers though, putting Dorian in a love triangle between A Martinez and Tuc Watkins – life could be worse –lol!
